This unique outcropping of rock near the present-day border of southwestern Wyoming and Utah served as one of the many valuable landmarks along the trail. At this point the migrants were traveling overland across a rolling terrain, no longer traversing next to a river or stream. Seeing this and other landmarks gave the pioneers assurance that they were on track with achieving their destination. The trail for the emigrants is at the base of the hillside.
